Question: Is withdrawal from opiates as bad as they say?

I'm just coming off of oxycontin and percocets. So far I just feel really really depressed, want more pills, can't sleep, don't really want to be around anyone, and just feel really bizarre. Is this even withdrawal? If so what other fun things do I have to look forward to? Also is it as bad as heroin?

When you come off opiates you should come off them gradually over a period of months to reduce withdrawal sideaffects. Cut the dose down by 10-20% every fortnight or so. If you experience side effects, reduce it by less for each step. There's no reason to make yourself unduly suffer!

It's gradual for this to subside. It depends on the amount you took during your addiction to cause bad withdraw symptoms. Heroin is worse. Heroin addicts need a detox center to help them remove the addiction with shots of meds. So, you are not experiencing those symptoms of withdraw from retired heroin addicts. Heroin addicts often go back to the addiction after detox help. I'm happy for you, you quit the habit as it can become deadly by slowly poisoning your body. You don't want to add any more meds to your body right now even though you feel depressed. Adding any more chemicals can increase the problem. Your body is just healing it's all apart of the process. Sleep a lot if that helps. Make sure you are eating properly too and lots of water. Try going to the gym or exercise. That will help increase your blood flow and give you more energy. It's hard to get the motivation to go as it seems like a pain in the rear and not "fun " but once you start exercising you feel great afterwords like a natural high. You want to get that natural heart rate back and this will be a good way to help focus on something to make you feel great. Or find a hobby an interest you like and start on that. Focusing on something other with a positive distraction will help keep you from focusing on the withdraw. Our mind is more powerful then we realize. Hope I helped.

The side affects will pass why not look into the long term damage these drugs do to the body so you can remind yourself why you are going though a temperory state of discomfort to come off them remind yourself that your body is only clearing out and be kind to yourself go for a massage or some other activity you enjoy and good luck with it think of the long game and the long term benifits xxx
